You’ve probably heard of Skid Row, if you know anything about glam metal. Even if you didn’t know much about Glam Metal, they’re one of those bands that was probably inserted in your memory.
With huge hair, loud guitars, big personalities, and even bigger songs, Skid Row became one of the biggest rock bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Songs like “18 and Life,” “I Remember You,” and “Youth Gone Wild” helped make them stars almost overnight.
Their music could be catchy and melodic, but it could also be loud, angry, dark, and downright heavy. That mix helped them stand out from many of their glam metal peers.
So, who exactly is Skid Row? Today we’ll cover who Skid Row was, and the legacy that endures along with them as they continue as a legacy act.
When Did Skid Row Form?
Skid Row formed in 1986 in New Jersey, founded by bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo. Sabo had previously played with Bon Jovi before helping build Skid Row.
The lineup soon came together with guitarist Scotti Hill, drummer Rob Affuso, and a young singer named Sebastian Bach.
Bach joined the band in 1987 after Sabo heard him sing. With Bach out front, Skid Row quickly became known for their wild live shows and larger-than-life attitude.
They spent the next couple of years playing clubs and building a following before landing a deal with Atlantic Records.
Then everything changed.
Skid Row’s Big Break
In 1989, the band released their self-titled debut album, Skid Row.
It was a massive success.
The album produced some of the band’s biggest songs, including:

- “I Remember You”
- “Youth Gone Wild”
The band quickly went from playing clubs to playing huge stages. Their connection to Bon Jovi also helped. The band then opened for Bon Jovi on tour, putting them in front of an enormous audience.

Was Skid Row a Glam Metal Band?
Yes — but there’s a little more to the story.
Skid Row is often grouped with glam metal, hair metal, and pop metal, especially because of their look and their early success. They’re also considered a hard rock and heavy metal band.
And their sound changed quite a bit over time.
Their first album had plenty of catchy hooks and big power ballads. But Skid Row got noticeably heavier on their next records.
That’s one of the things that makes them so interesting.
They looked like a glam metal band, but they weren’t afraid to get aggressive.
Slave to the Grind
In 1991, Skid Row released Slave to the Grind.
And this is where the band really showed what they could do.
The album was heavier, darker, and more aggressive than their debut. Songs like “Monkey Business,” “Slave to the Grind,” “Wasted Time,” and “Quicksand Jesus” showed a much harder side of the band.
It also made history.
Slave to the Grind debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making it the first heavy metal album to do so.
That’s a pretty big deal.
While plenty of glam metal bands were known mostly for catchy singles and power ballads, Skid Row proved they could make a genuinely heavy album and still reach the top of the charts.
What Happened to Skid Row?
The 1990s changed everything for rock music.
Grunge exploded onto the scene, and the glam metal sound that had ruled MTV only a few years earlier started to fade.
Skid Row released Subhuman Race in 1995. It was another heavy record, but by then the music world had changed dramatically.
Not long after, the classic lineup fell apart.
Sebastian Bach left the band, and Skid Row continued with different singers over the years. Bach went on to have a successful solo career and also worked in acting and Broadway.
The split also created one of the biggest questions among Skid Row fans:

So far, the answer has been no.
Is Skid Row Still Together?
Yes.
Skid Row has continued as a band through several lineup changes.
The group released The Gang’s All Here in 2022 with singer Erik Grönwall, and they also released their first official live album and concert film, Live in London, in 2024.
But the story is changing again.
In 2026, Skid Row is celebrating its 40th anniversary and has launched a worldwide search for its next lead vocalist.
So while the lineup may keep changing, the Skid Row name isn’t going anywhere.

Skid Row may have come out of the glam metal explosion of the late ’80s, but their best songs still sound loud, angry, emotional, and completely alive.
And 40 years after the band formed, people are still talking about them.
